What We Grow
-

As the primary grower for our sister company Oat Co. Scotland, we provide the high-quality gluten-free oats required to produce certified and traceable oats for food production clients. Our commitment to quality and traceability ensures that our customers receive products of the highest standard, while also providing them with the assurance that our crops are grown using sustainable farming practices. We are proud to support our sister company in its mission to produce high-quality gluten-free oats for the food industry.
-
Wheat
Wheat is a versatile crop that has sustained its popularity over the years, and at Savock Farms, we grow wheat that caters to a broad range of customers. Our wheat is in demand among animal feed companies in the local area, as well as distilling businesses with a global reach. We are committed to producing high-quality wheat that meets the unique needs of each of our customers, while also maintaining sustainable farming practices that ensure the long-term health of our land.
-
Barley
Spring Barley for malting is the most extensively grown cereal crop in Scotland, and at Savock Farms, we recognise its importance to the Scottish economy. During the spring sowing period, we dedicate a significant portion of our land to this crop, with the aim of producing high-quality grain for the Scottish whisky industry. In fact, we plant enough barley during this period to produce nearly 2 million bottles of Scotch whisky. We take great pride in contributing to Scotland's rich tradition of whisky production through our commitment to sustainable farming practices.
-
Oilseed Rape
At Savock Farms, we recognise the importance of crop rotation in maintaining the long-term health of our land, and our oilseed rape crop plays a crucial role in this process. This crop is grown as a break crop between other crops to improve soil health and reduce the buildup of pests and diseases. Once harvested, the oilseed rape seeds are sold to a major farmers' cooperative to be crushed and refined into vegetable oil. This oil is then used in a wide range of applications, including the production of household vegetable oils for cooking and baking. By contributing to the production of sustainable and healthy vegetable oils, we are proud to support a healthier and more sustainable food system
-
Grass
Including grass in an arable rotation at Savock farms offers a range of benefits that make it a valuable addition. Firstly, it has the potential to enhance soil health by increasing soil organic matter, improving soil structure, and reducing erosion, while also helping to reduce soil compaction. Secondly, grass is an excellent crop for nutrient cycling, as it can uptake and recycle excess nitrogen and other nutrients left in the soil by the previous crop. Thirdly, grass provides an effective weed and pest control measure by creating a dense ground cover that can suppress weed growth and reduce pest pressure. Finally, incorporating grass in the rotation adds crop diversity, which can lower pest and disease pressure and improve soil health and resilience. In addition, grass is a suitable feedstock for anaerobic digesters due to its high content of organic matter and carbohydrates, which can be easily broken down by the microorganisms to produce biogas, a renewable energy source comprised of methane and carbon dioxide. It is also a key crop in our Gluten Free Oat production to prevent cross contamination from previous crops.
