6 miles of Hedgerow
At Savock Farms, we have made a concerted effort to plant new and maintain mature hedgerows across our farming operations, covering over 6 miles of hedgerows that require annual upkeep. These hedgerows not only serve as natural barriers between different fields they also offer many environmental benefits for farmers. For instance, they help to minimize soil erosion, promote biodiversity by providing habitats for a variety of plant and animal species, and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

40km's of Watercourses
Savock Farms takes great care in managing over 40km of rivers and burns, which are a frequent part of the natural environment in North East Scotland. It is vital to manage these watercourses meticulously to ensure that the soil, livestock, and wildlife on the farm remain healthy. As such, we prioritize the proper maintenance of these watercourses to prevent soil erosion, maintain high water quality, and preserve the habitats of various species. Our commitment to responsible watercourse management reflects our dedication to sustainable farming practices and the preservation of the local ecosystem.

Reducing Inorganic Fertilisers
Since introducing an anaerobic digestion plant to our farm in 2017, we have successfully reduced our usage of inorganic fertilisers by over 500 tonnes per year. This not only promotes better soil health but also significantly decreases our carbon footprint. As farmers, it is becoming increasingly important for us to be mindful of our impact on the environment. Our recent carbon calculator assessment demonstrated many positive impacts from our updated farming practices. However, it also highlights areas where we can continue to improve and remain proactive towards achieving our sustainability goals.
